LED vs LCD TVs

The LED TV vs LCD TV debate is actually a friendly talk, as both are manufactured with similar if not the same improved technology and both are worthwhile--one could say they are the younger siblings of the very out-dated CRT TVs. Our LCD and LED kids inherited all of the smart, sporty, good looking genes from mum and dad and left the older siblings looking like everything else in the electronics store.

Think what Avatar would look like on the TV your grandfather used until you bought him a new LED TV? Whether viewing commercials, movies, documentaries like Blue Planet with High Definition filming technology, or home movies, the family of LCD TVs, including the LED TV, top the list of the best of the best TVs you can buy.

LED vs LCD: Why LCD and LED TVs are the best choice

When deciding LED vs LCD, you should weigh what price range you are comfortable with compared to the features you want.

LED TVs are the “super-charged” LCD TV and with their added features, they are a bit more on the pocket, but their features are worth the extra cash if you take TV viewing more seriously than the average TV viewer.

Three main points to keep in mind when deciding LED vs LCD: What the larger price tag on the LED pays for:

1. “Backlighting” The main difference when comparing LED vs LCD flat screen TVs is the new type of light used at the back of the TV screen, as LED TVs do use LCD lights in the front panel of the screen. This Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) greatly improves many picture quality features including contrast and color accuracy.

Picture Quality

  • LED screens use “edge-lighting,” where rows of LED lights line the edge of the screen that designs impressively thin screens and greatly improves color accuracy and contrast.
  • More traditional LCD without edge-lighting are more “wall-mount” friendly.
  • LED TV’s screen contrast does not degrade in quality until viewing 75 degrees from the center of the screen.
  • LCD TV’s flat screen holds perfect contrast until viewing 30 degrees from the center.

2. The latest LED feature is “local dimming”

A main feature of the newest LED TV models is “local dimming,” where contrast capabilities of the TV screen are greatly improved because the LED lights behind the screen can be controlled individually or in banks.

  • Improved color accuracy. LED models that have colored backlights produce more realistic colors on the screen compared the white fluorescent lights that are used in traditional LCD TVs.
  • Improved contrast-The contrast ratio is the screen’s ability to show high contrast areas of the blackest black to the whitest white. Your LED really shows what it is made of when it displays an image of a dark scene with many shades of black on the screen.
  • LCD TVs display color accuracy just as good as LED TVs that do not have the colored backlighting feature.

3. Size

  • The more traditional LCD TVs can be purchased in a larger variety of sizes because LCD models have been manufactured for a longer amount of time than LED models.
  • The diameters of LCD TVs that can be purchased are 15 inches to 65 inches.
  • LED models have not been manufactured for as long as other LCD models, so the available diameters for LED TVs are 46 inches to 70 inches.

Another thing to think about is the less of a dent in your yearly electricity bill. Think about how much you watch TV - no doubt the time, and subsequently, the money spent on electricity adds up. All models of LCD TVs (including LED) are more efficient in electricity consumption compared to the other popular plasma flat screen TV models, but here are a few energy differences:

  • Many LED models with the edge-lighting feature can consume 40% less energy than most traditional LCD TVs.
  • The LED models with “local-dimming” (the feature that allows contrast and color to be controlled in specific areas of the screen) do consume more energy than other models of LCD TVs.
  • Because the LED lights do not produce as much wasted energy heating the lights at the back of the screen, there is less wear and tear on LED vs LCD TVs, extending the life of the LED TV.
  • LCD models have been on the market long enough to be tested to a guaranteed long lifespan.

Hopefully now you have a better idea about the difference between LED and LCD TVs and why the LED vs LCD debate is such a big one. Please be sure to checkout out Vision Digitals range of LED and LCD TVs which are all available for sale online.
